GeneratePress theme review and silly mistakes

From , on June 12, 2021

This WordPress blog is an example of the GeneratePress theme (except landing pages). BEFORE you see what it looks like – read why this theme is right on the money.

I’ve been using GeneratePress Pro for a long time and this is my overall experience for 2021.

And yes some of these links are affiliate links so I get a small commission at absolutely no additional cost to you.

Is GeneratePress theme the fastest WordPress theme?

As you probably know users and Google love fast websites.

However, your website speed depends on a lot of factors. One of the factor is your website structure and coding.

I have found that GeneratePress provides simple coding. And my results are decent. Check this out.

How fast is this theme REALLY?

Before you see the results understand that I am using simple shared hosting – nothing fancy. So the results can vary.

As you can guess these are decent results and yes, a lot of the things depend on the Host and what you do with a theme. Let’s talk more about the theme.

What do I love about the GeneratePress theme?

Ready to go website templates

They have some awesome templates I wish I had used.

My advice is you must select your template BEFORE you build your website. You can’t switch later. And this is because you’d lose all your posts and pages if you try to switch templates. So look at the right template and settle on one.

Ability to use the theme on up to 500 websites

You probably don’t have 500 websites. But it’s always good for negotiations… plus, any other side project.

Case-study: How a non-profit website gained speed

Recently, I used GeneratePress on a non-profit organization’s website. It was so slow that even the members were unable to use it.

I used the GeneratePress theme and their website went flying and finally became usable.

Clearly, if it works for a non-profit where every penny is saved then it would work for a business website too.

Support staff is awesome

Even if you are a pro at coding it’s good to know that someone is on your side.

I’ve needed quick replies and without fail, I’ve received some advice from the staff. Or I was able to find my way with either through the Documentation or the forum – which is very active.

I’d gladly give 10 out of 10 for the empathy and help they show towards their members.

What I don’t like about GeneratePress?

No ready-made landing page templates.

Landing page templates make your life easy. Because ultimately, marketing is the soul of a business.

But the theme fails in this regard. Yes, you CAN create simple landing pages with just text and buttons. But apart from that – if you want FAQs, or pop-ups, or any other feature then it doesn’t work.

Elementor gives you more freedom.

Elementor and GeneratePress sometimes don’t go well.

Often everything is fine. But if you face any problem with alignment on a webpage then try removing your cache. It’s the Elementor.

Advanced marketing features missing.

Of course, being light-weight certain things must be sacrificed.

GeneratePress Theme: Avoid silly mistakes I made and some tips

GeneratePress child theme

Before you start making any changes to your website upload this child theme. Make this child theme your primary theme and then make any changes to this theme.

Otherwise, your work will be lost as soon as the theme updates.

Display “Last Updated” date

If you want to display the last updated date on your blog then you need to add this CSS code. This will hide the post date which isn’t good for SEO.

.posted-on .updated + .entry-date {
    display: none;
}
.posted-on .updated {
    display: inline-block;
}

Add margin above the headlines

The theme only allows for the bottom margin. To add margin above headlines simply add this code in “Additional CSS”… this way the layout will become more intuitive:

body.single .inside-article h2, body.single .inside-article h3 {
    margin-top: 2.25em;
}

Show image caption

We read captions.

It’s an important real estate. But by default WordPress hides them. Use this code to unhide captions:

.wp-block-image figcaption {
    text-align: center;
	font-size: 0.75em;}

The final word on GeneratePress Pro

GeneratePress is a very fast and lightweight theme. If you are on shared hosting then it can speed up your website.

The templates serve most of your needs and you get amazing value for the price. It’s NOT a magic bullet for your marketing, however.

Despite the cons I highly recommend it. If you have any questions ask them in the comments below. I read every comment.
